A live smartphone disappears from a busy display wall in seconds. The loss is not limited to the handset: staff time, replacement cost, interrupted sales and a weakened customer experience all follow. A retail theft prevention checklist gives store teams a practical way to protect open merchandise without turning every interaction into a barrier.
For high-value, high-touch products, the objective is not simply to make theft difficult. It is to make unauthorised removal slow, conspicuous and unprofitable, while allowing genuine customers to pick up, compare and test products naturally. That requires layered physical security, disciplined store processes and regular review of how the display performs in real trading conditions.
Start with a product and risk assessment
The same security method will not suit a pair of headphones, a premium tablet and a cabinet of boxed accessories. Begin by identifying which products are most exposed, where loss occurs and how the item is displayed.
Look at unit value, resale demand, ease of concealment and how quickly an item can be detached or removed. Smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, portable speakers, power tools and branded accessories often require stronger protection because they are desirable, portable and easy to resell. Smaller goods may have a lower individual value but create substantial loss through volume.
Location matters as much as product value. A display near an entrance, exit, blind corner or queue line may need a different level of protection from one positioned within clear sight of a staffed service point. Consider peak trading periods too. A solution that works when the shop is quiet may be inadequate when staff are assisting multiple customers.
Classify each display as low, medium or high risk. This creates a sound basis for selecting mechanical, alarmed or multi-layer security rather than applying one standard fixture throughout the estate.
Retail theft prevention checklist for open displays
Use the following checks during a new installation, store refit or routine loss-prevention review:
- Identify priority stock. Record the products with the highest shrinkage, highest resale value and greatest exposure to customer handling. Include display samples, packaged stock and accessories.
- Match security to the risk level. Use straightforward mechanical retention for lower-risk items, alarmed retracting tethers for higher-risk products and layered protection where removal would cause significant loss.
- Check attachment surfaces. Ensure bases, brackets, adhesive pads and mounting hardware suit the display material, product finish and expected customer handling. A strong tether is only as effective as its fixing point.
- Test every release and alarm. Confirm that authorised staff can release products quickly, while customers cannot defeat or bypass the system through normal handling.
- Protect the attachment point. Review exposed screws, cable routing, rear access and counter cut-outs. Security is weakened when the fixing point can be reached easily.
- Secure packaged accessories. Use display hook security, stop locks, spider wraps or accessory protection for items that can be swept from shelves or concealed in bags.
- Keep sightlines clear. Avoid creating hidden areas with oversized point-of-sale, stacked cartons or poorly positioned fixtures. Clear visibility supports both deterrence and staff intervention.
- Assign daily checks. Staff should inspect tethers, alarms, mounts, hooks and locks before opening, after high-footfall periods and at close.
- Record faults and incidents. A missing product, damaged cable or failed alarm should trigger a documented response, not an informal handover between shifts.
- Review performance after change. Alterations to product ranges, merchandising layouts, staffing levels or opening hours can change the risk profile immediately.
A checklist only reduces loss when ownership is clear. Allocate responsibility for checks to named roles, define escalation routes and make sure replacement components are available before a damaged fixture becomes an unprotected display position.
Select security that supports customer interaction
Over-securing a product can reduce the value of an open display. If customers cannot lift a device, test a camera, hear a speaker or compare a finish, the display may protect stock at the expense of conversion. The right approach is proportionate restraint.
Mechanical retracting tethers provide reliable physical retention for many display applications. They allow a controlled level of movement and are often well suited to devices that customers need to handle. For higher-risk products or less supervised locations, alarmed retracting tethers add an audible deterrent if the cable is cut, detached or tampered with.
For smartphones and tablets, purpose-designed display security should hold the device securely while preserving access to the screen, controls and charging point where required. The fixing method must also account for the product’s weight, shape and rear-panel material. A universal solution can be useful for mixed ranges, but a tailored fixture may give better mechanical strength and a cleaner presentation for a major rollout.

Secure the whole display, not just the hero item

Assess cable bundles, chargers, replacement straps, boxed consumables and display hooks alongside the primary product. Hook security is particularly relevant where high volumes of small packaged goods are presented on pegboards. A suitable stop or locking device can prevent a bulk sweep while still allowing staff to replenish efficiently.
Spider wraps and cable alarms can protect boxed products that are too large for a hook or too varied for a fixed mount. They are especially useful for portable electronics, premium tools and larger accessory packs. Their visible presence can also signal that the category is actively protected, which matters in busy environments where staff cannot observe every fixture continuously.
Do not overlook the furniture. Countertop units, freestanding plinths and display panels need secure fixing to prevent the fixture itself becoming the weak point. If a product is tethered to a lightweight, movable stand, the system may only relocate the vulnerability.
Build security checks into daily store routines
Physical hardware performs best when store teams know what normal looks like. A stretched cable, loose adhesive pad, partly cut tether or damaged lock is often visible before it becomes a loss event. Brief checks at predictable points in the day are more reliable than occasional inspections after a theft has occurred.
Train staff to recognise tampering without asking them to become security guards. They should know how to test a display safely, identify an alarm fault, secure an item temporarily and report a repeat concern. They also need a clear process for responding when an alarm activates. Confusion creates delay, and delay reduces the deterrent effect.
Replenishment is another pressure point. Stock left on a counter during busy periods, empty packaging left in view and unprotected returns can create opportunities that a well-designed display system cannot solve. Coordinate security procedures with delivery, replenishment, cleaning and visual merchandising routines so protective measures are not removed and forgotten.
Measure loss, friction and display performance
Theft prevention should be measured against commercial outcomes, not treated as a standalone hardware decision. Track known thefts and damaged fixtures, but also monitor alarm activations, maintenance demand, staff release times and customer handling behaviour.
If alarms trigger frequently through ordinary use, customers may be deterred and staff may begin to ignore them. If a tether length is too short, the product may remain secure but fail to demonstrate properly. Conversely, if a system is rarely challenged but high-value loss persists, the issue may be in adjacent stock, poor sightlines or an insecure fixture base rather than the device mount itself.
Review the data by store, product category and display location. This reveals whether a problem is local, seasonal or systemic. It also helps procurement and loss-prevention teams justify a higher level of protection where the commercial case is strongest.
