The aim is not always to make theft physically impossible. In an open retail environment, a good system increases the time, noise, effort and visibility involved in removing an item. That gives colleagues, security personnel and surrounding customers a better opportunity to notice suspicious activity. At the same time, the tether must support visual merchandising. Cables that are too short prevent meaningful product interaction. Consider the product’s replacement value, resale appeal, size, weight and the ease with which it can be concealed. Assess where the fixture sits in relation to entrances, sightlines, tills and staffed areas. Also look at the likely attack method. Some losses are simple grab-and-go incidents; others involve cutting tools, force against a mounting point or attempts to defeat an alarm.
The fixture itself matters just as much. A high-strength tether fixed to a lightweight acrylic riser or poorly constructed display unit transfers the weakness elsewhere. Decide how much freedom the customer needs
A display for headphones may need enough reach for a customer to try them on comfortably. Look for cables with suitable cut resistance and an attachment designed for the product’s shape and surface. Adhesive pads can be effective when correctly specified and applied to a clean, compatible surface, but they are not interchangeable across every material.
