In high-touch retail, where customers expect to handle smartphones, tablets, wearables, headphones and accessories freely, the right approach has to protect stock without killing the experience that drives conversion.
That balance is where many retailers struggle. Too much restriction and the display stops working commercially. Too little protection and shrink rises, staff confidence drops and replenishment costs quickly outweigh the value of the open display. A practical strategy sits between those extremes. The temptation is to standardise one security method across every location for procurement convenience. Sometimes that is sensible, especially for large roll-outs, but it can also create over-engineered low-risk displays and under-protected high-risk ones. A layered strategy works better when it matches the stock value, theft frequency, display format, store traffic and staffing model.
High-risk categories typically need stronger mechanical protection combined with active alarming. Smartphones, tablets, premium audio, gaming devices and compact electronics are obvious examples because they are both desirable and easy to remove quickly. Accessories and boxed goods often require a different approach, such as protected hooks, spider wraps, sensor-based solutions or controlled open merchandising with visible deterrence.
Layered protection is what makes the difference
Single-point security has obvious weak spots. If one cable is cut, one adhesive fails or one alarm is ignored, the product is gone. Layered protection reduces that dependency. It combines visible deterrence, physical restraint and, where needed, alarm response.

Match the security method to the merchandise
Different categories demand different protection. Smartphones and tablets usually need a balance of charging, powered presentation and strong retention. Headphones, speakers and wearables often need more freedom for demonstration, but that should not mean soft security. Alarmed retracting tethers and purpose-built mounts can preserve interaction while keeping the product anchored and visible. Laptops and larger devices may require heavier-duty fixing points and greater attention to cable routing, because exposed wiring can become the weakest point in the display.
For packaged accessories or higher-risk boxed stock, display hook security and spider wraps often make more commercial sense than turning every item into a locked cabinet line. They preserve open merchandising, improve stock visibility and create a clear deterrent against rapid removal. The right answer depends on whether the item needs to be handled, tested, carried to till or simply seen.
Store layout and staffing still matter
Even the best hardware can be undermined by poor placement. Blind spots, congested table layouts and displays positioned too close to exits all increase vulnerability. If high-value stock is placed where staff cannot see it consistently, losses will follow.
An effective open display theft prevention strategy considers display geography as carefully as product choice. Premium and high-theft items should sit within natural sightlines from service points or staffed zones. Demo tables need enough space for customers to interact with products without creating easy cover for group distraction theft. In some stores, relocating a fixture by a few metres delivers a measurable security improvement without changing the merchandising concept at all.
Staffing is equally important, but this does not mean posting someone next to every display. It means designing displays that staff can manage confidently. Alarm response should be clear, reset processes should be simple and replacement parts should be readily available. If systems are fiddly, inconsistent or prone to false alarms, staff engagement drops and so does security effectiveness.
Maintenance is part of prevention
Retail teams often focus heavily on installation and too lightly on what happens six months later. Open display security lives in a harsh environment. That routine does not need to be complex. It needs to be consistent. How to judge whether your strategy is working
The obvious measure is shrink, but it should not be the only one. A good strategy also improves display uptime, reduces staff workarounds and keeps products available for customer interaction. If devices are regularly missing, alarmed off, uncharged or removed from display because the system is awkward, the merchandising value is being lost even if theft appears under control.
Review the strategy against four practical questions. Are theft attempts being deterred or merely recorded? Are staff able to operate the system with minimal friction? Does the display still encourage engagement? And can the solution scale across sites without constant exceptions? If the answer to any of those is no, the issue is rarely solved by adding one more alarm. It usually means the overall security design needs tightening.
