A premium phone case, a pair of wireless earbuds or a smart watch strap may appear low risk beside a handset or laptop. In practice, these compact, high-margin products are often among the easiest items to conceal and remove from an open display. Knowing how to secure open sell accessories means protecting that stock without turning an engaging accessories fixture into a locked cabinet.

The most effective approach is not to apply the same device to every item. Accessory ranges vary in value, shape, packaging, attachment points and customer handling requirements. A well-designed solution combines physical restraint, visible deterrence and a practical staff routine, matched to the risk of the individual product and display location.

Start with the accessory, not the security product

Open-sell security works best when it is specified around the merchandise. Before selecting tethers, alarms or locking fixtures, assess what customers need to do with the item. A customer comparing a charging cable may only need to inspect the connector and length. Someone choosing headphones needs to lift, handle and try the product. A wearable accessory may need to be picked up, turned over and viewed from several angles.

Consider the item’s retail value, resale appeal and rate of loss, but also its physical construction. Some accessories have a strong, discreet point that can accept a mechanical tether or security loop. Others have no suitable attachment point and need to be secured through packaging, a purpose-designed bracket or a display hook. Security should not rely on an adhesive pad alone where an item is likely to receive sustained pulling or repeated handling.

Location changes the risk profile too. A compact accessory wall close to an exit, an unattended concession or a busy promotional bay generally needs more protection than a counter display within clear staff sightlines. Loss prevention teams should use incident data where available, then validate it against how the fixture operates during peak trading.

Use layered protection for open sell accessories

A single security measure can deter opportunistic theft, but layers make a display substantially harder to defeat. The right combination depends on the risk level and the desired customer experience.

For lower-risk accessories, a mechanical retracting tether can provide a clear physical restraint while allowing customers to lift and inspect the product. The tether should have enough extension for natural handling, but not enough for the product to reach an aisle, exit route or adjoining fixture. Retracting units also keep the display orderly, reducing the tangles and untidy presentation that can undermine a premium fixture.

Higher-value or higher-loss products often justify an alarmed tether. If the cable is cut, removed or pulled beyond its intended limit, an audible alarm immediately draws attention to the event. Where physical strength is the priority, mechanical security should take the lead. For boxed accessories, consider whether the security can pass through or around the packaging without obscuring key product information or damaging the carton during normal customer handling. Where the product changes frequently or the design does not support a reliable adhesive bond, a mechanical loop, bracket or bespoke fixture may be the better long-term choice.

If a customer cannot test the function that justifies the purchase, the display is protected but the sale is weakened. The objective is controlled interaction, not restricted interaction.

Plan for replacement and replenishment

Open displays are operational systems, not static installations. Staff must be able to replace a sold sample, remove a faulty unit and replenish hook stock without improvising. If the security procedure is slow or unclear, teams may bypass it during busy periods, leaving the display vulnerable.

Build a simple, documented routine around authorised keys, release tools and replacement parts. Keep them controlled, but available to the staff who need them. Check that replacement tether heads, adhesive components, hook stops and alarm batteries can be accessed quickly. A fixture that remains partially empty because it is difficult to reset does not deliver the commercial value expected from open selling.

Design the display to support deterrence

Visible security has value. A clearly secured accessory communicates that the retailer actively manages theft, discouraging opportunistic offenders before an alarm or physical restraint is tested. However, the display should still look deliberate and well finished.

Cable routing is critical. Tethers should follow consistent paths, sit neatly against the fixture and retract without snagging on products or graphic panels. Avoid excessive cable length, loose adhesive pads and mixed security hardware where possible. These details affect both durability and the customer’s perception of the merchandise.

Sightlines matter as much as hardware. Position higher-risk accessories where colleagues have a clear view from service points or main walkways. Do not hide compact, high-value samples behind oversized point-of-sale material. Where the display must be remote, increase the physical and alarmed protection rather than relying on supervision that is unlikely to be maintained.

It is also worth separating display stock from saleable stock. A securely tethered demonstration item can remain available for handling, while packaged inventory is held in protected hook positions, behind the counter or in a controlled drawer. This reduces the number of items exposed at any one time without making the assortment feel limited.

Test security against real store conditions

Security should be tested as it will be used, not simply checked at installation. Ask a colleague unfamiliar with the fixture to handle the accessory as a shopper would. Can they lift it comfortably? Does the tether retract cleanly? Is the product still visible from its intended viewing angle? Then test the security response: is the attachment secure, does the alarm activate correctly and can staff identify the affected display quickly?

Repeat these checks after merchandising updates, seasonal resets and range changes. Small changes such as a new package size, a revised product finish or a different fixture panel can alter how the security performs. Regular inspections also identify frayed cables, weakened bonds, missing hook stops and depleted batteries before they become an incident.

For multi-site programmes, standardisation is usually more valuable than selecting a different device for every store. Define a small number of approved solutions by product category and risk level, then provide clear installation standards. This supports consistent presentation, simpler purchasing and more reliable staff training. Exceptions should be reserved for genuinely unusual products or design-led displays that require a bespoke security approach.

When a bespoke solution is the better investment

Standard products cover many accessory applications, but not every display is standard. Curved fixtures, premium materials, unusual product shapes and branded interaction requirements can make off-the-shelf security look intrusive or perform poorly.
