A missing display phone, wearable or power tool is not simply a replacement-cost issue. It creates an unavailable sale, staff disruption, a damaged fixture and, in some cases, a weaker customer perception of the entire department. Knowing how to reduce display stock loss means protecting the item, the fixture and the customer experience at the same time.

The most effective approach is not to lock everything away. Open display remains valuable because customers want to pick up, compare and test products before they buy. The commercial task is to make theft difficult, time-consuming and highly visible, while keeping legitimate interaction refreshingly simple.

Start with the real risk on each display

Not every item requires the same level of protection. A standard accessory rack, a premium smartphone table and a wall of cordless power tools present different theft opportunities. Applying one security method across the entire estate can lead to overspend in low-risk areas and insufficient protection where losses are concentrated.

Begin by reviewing shrink data alongside the physical environment. Identify which stock disappears, when it happens and how it is taken. Consider product value, resale demand, ease of concealment, packaging, proximity to exits and whether colleagues can see the display from their normal positions. A small item with strong resale value may need more protection than a larger product with a higher ticket price.

Also assess the display construction. Weak points are often not the security device itself, but the furniture, cable routing or attachment point. A tether fixed to lightweight furniture, for example, cannot deliver the mechanical strength expected from the cable. Security should be specified as a complete installation, not as an individual component.

A single measure can deter opportunistic theft, but determined offenders look for the easiest point of failure. Layered protection is more dependable because it combines a physical delay with an audible response, a visible deterrent and a process for staff intervention.

The customer can explore key features, while the device remains connected to the fixture. The right specification depends on loss history, store format, fixture design and the level of customer interaction required.

Make tampering difficult before an alarm sounds

Alarms provide a valuable response, but mechanical resistance is what buys time. The longer it takes to remove a product, the more likely the attempt is to be noticed, challenged or abandoned.

Specify security products with strong cable construction, tamper-resistant housings and attachment methods matched to the merchandise. Adhesive pads can be appropriate for certain display applications, but surface preparation and cure time are critical. For higher-risk devices, mechanical fixings, brackets or purpose-designed mounts may offer better long-term security and repeatable installation quality.

Cable routing deserves the same attention. Exposed joins, loose cable loops and accessible fixings invite interference. Route cables through protected points in the fixture where possible, reduce snagging opportunities and ensure the product cannot be twisted against the tether attachment. On an open table, the security solution should look deliberate and professionally installed, rather than improvised.

This is also where bespoke design can be commercially useful. Non-standard products, unusual furniture and branded demonstration units can create gaps that off-the-shelf hardware does not fully address. A purpose-designed bracket, enclosure or fixing can improve both protection and presentation, especially across a multi-site rollout.

Protect the display without preventing sales

Security that makes a product awkward to touch can reduce conversion just as surely as an empty display. Customers should be able to compare devices, test screens, try controls and understand the product without waiting for assistance for every basic interaction.

Place security components where they are least intrusive to the product experience. For a mobile phone, avoid obscuring the screen, charging port or principal buttons. For headphones, make sure the cable arrangement does not prevent a realistic fitting or demonstration. For tools, allow enough movement to assess weight, grip and key functions, while controlling the product’s reach.

Visual merchandising teams should be involved early, not asked to accommodate security after a display has been designed. A coordinated specification can conceal cable routes, preserve sightlines and maintain consistent product spacing. The result is a display that looks considered, remains shoppable and presents fewer easy opportunities for theft.

Build simple checks into store operations

Even the strongest physical protection needs routine inspection. Tethers wear, adhesive bonds can weaken, alarms require power and fixtures change as ranges are reset. Small failures become expensive when they remain unnoticed for days.

A practical daily check should confirm that products are present, attached correctly, charging where required and capable of alarming. Teams should test a manageable sample of alarmed units on a planned rotation rather than leaving every test until a quarterly audit. Any damaged cable, loose mount or unreliable alarm should be taken out of service and replaced promptly.

Store teams also need a clear response when an alarm activates. The priority is a calm, visible and consistent approach, not a confrontation. Colleagues should know who checks the alert, how they reset the display and when a suspected theft or damaged device is escalated. If alarms are routinely ignored or silenced without investigation, their deterrent value falls quickly.

Good housekeeping helps too. Keep counters clear of tools that could be used to interfere with fixings, remove discarded packaging promptly and ensure spare stock is not left unsecured during replenishment. These actions are straightforward, but they close common weaknesses around an otherwise well-secured display.

Use loss data to refine the specification

Display security should be reviewed after installation, not treated as a one-off procurement exercise. Compare losses, alarm activations, damage rates and staff feedback by store, category and fixture type. A display that produces frequent false alarms may need a better mounting method or a different product configuration. A category with continuing losses may need an additional layer of protection.

This evidence-led approach prevents broad, costly changes based on isolated incidents. It can also reveal operational issues that are not immediately obvious. For example, repeated cable damage in one location may point to poor product positioning, heavy customer handling or an unsuitable tether length rather than deliberate tampering.

For larger estates, standardising approved security formats makes replacement, training and visual consistency easier. Keep enough compatible spares available to restore a compromised display quickly.
